Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Packing Checklist

The Great Smoky Mountains are one of the oldest mountain ranges on earth, blanketed in old-growth forest, cloud-soaked ridgelines, and more than 800 miles of trails. The "smoke" is from vegetation breathing moisture into the air, hanging it over the ridges like wet wool. This is the most-visited national park in the country for a reason, and also the wettest park east of the Pacific Northwest.
The Smokies don't punish you with elevation the way Rocky Mountain or the Sierra does. They punish you with weather. Lower trails sit around 1,500 feet; the ridge tops climb past 6,600 feet, and the temperature can drop 20°F between your car and the summit. Annual rainfall ranges from 50 to over 80 inches depending on elevation, which means trails turn to creeks, creeks turn to rivers, and an "easy" hike can become a three-hour wet-feet slog if a thunderstorm catches you on the wrong ridge. Mentally prepare to be wet and pack like the forecast is going to be wrong, because it usually is.

Filter by season, gender, and trip type to see exactly what to pack.
The Smokies are humid, and a sweat-soaked back is part of the deal. I'd take ventilation over extra pockets every time. A 20–30L pack handles water, layers, rain shell, and snacks for any day hike in the park.

Osprey Hikelite LT 30L
A good overall pack focused on comfort.

Gregory Citro 30L
A pack designed with cooling and hydration built in.

Osprey Tempest 20 Womens Daypack
Versatile daypack with back panel ventilation and a 20L capacity. Fits smaller torso lengths.
Spring in the Smokies means 30-degree mornings and 70-degree afternoons. A merino top under a sun hoodie lets you peel layers as the day warms.

Cold gear in the Smokies during shoulder seasons is mostly about ridgetop wind and chilly mornings. Merino gloves, a beanie, and a neck gaiter pack small and earn their weight.

Merino Wool Gloves
Merino wool lightweight gloves

Merino Wool Beanie
This lightweight and moisture-wicking hat keeps you warm even when wet.

Buff Merino Neck Gaiter
Multi-use merino wool tube that works as neck warmer, face cover, hat, or balaclava.
A spork is all you need for trail snacks. Cooking on day hikes in the Smokies isn't required. Pack out, eat at the car.

Titanium Spork
Durable and versatile flatware utensil for your adventures.
A small power bank and a GPS watch handle most day hikes. Cell coverage is patchy — don't count on it for navigation.

Power Bank
Can fully charge most phones three times with power to spare

Forerunner GPS Watch
Perfect if you love to track your hikes.

In-reach mini 3
Lightweight SOS satellite communicator uses the global Iridium satellite network so you can stay connected without cell coverage
A first aid kit is the minimum. The Smokies have the densest black bear population in the eastern U.S. Make noise on blind corners and never approach a bear, especially in spring with cubs around.

Ultralight Medical Kit
First aid supplies designed for the backcountry.

SOL Emergency Bivvy
Heat-reflective emergency shelter that packs smaller than a soda can. Sub-4 oz insurance policy.

Fox 40 Emergency Whistle
Whistle that works when wet. Carries over a mile in open terrain.
Pack snacks dense in calories and easy to eat one-handed. The Smokies burn through your reserves faster than you'd think. Humidity does that.

Greenbelly Backpacking Meal
A meal made to keep you going on 20 mile days where keeping things fast and light is crucial.

Clif Bar Variety Pack
Oat-based energy bars with 10-12g of protein each. Once you get tired of them try a different brand.

Stinger Honey Waffles
Quick calories without ultra-processed ingredients. Take them for a fun boost on trail.

Bear Box Brew
Enjoy your own cold brew coffee on trail.
Trail runners over boots in the Smokies. Mud, slick roots, and frequent stream crossings dry out faster in mesh than in leather. Sandals double as camp shoes and let your feet breathe after a wet day.

The perfect balance of support and comfort for trail.

Trail Gaiters
Keep the rocks and dirt out of your shoes.

Z-Trail Barefoot Hiking Sandals

Bug protection is a category-defining concern here from early spring through fall. Ticks in this park can carry Lyme — they stay active until a hard freeze, so don't drop your guard in October. Permethrin-treated clothing plus Picaridin spray is the gold standard. Pack a tick removal tool, not just tweezers, and check yourself every night.

Nitecore Headlamp
Lightweight rechargeable headlamp.

Picaridin Insect Repellent
20% Picaridin bug spray that works as well as DEET without damaging gear or synthetic fabrics.

Permethrin Clothing Treatment
Pre-treat clothing with spray-on that kills ticks, mosquitos, and chiggers for up to 6 weeks per application.

Tick Removal Tool
Safe and relaible way to remove ticks without squeezing.

Tilley Airflo Hat
Ventilated hat with maximum sun protection UPF 50+
Water is everywhere in the Smokies. The job isn't carrying gallons, it's treating what you find. Invest in an efficient filtering setup. Every stream needs to be filtered. A SmartWater bottle threads onto a Sawyer or BeFree filter, which is why I'd pick one over a Nalgene for this park.

SmartWater 1L Bottle
The ultralight community favorite. Threads compatible with Sawyer and BeFree filters.

Platypus 2L water reservoir
Premium taste-free, leak-proof reservoir with fast flow rate

Sawyer Squeeze Water Filter
0.1 micron filter that removes 99.99999% of bacteria. Weighs 3 oz and lasts 100,000 gallons.

Liquid I.V. Hydration Multiplier
Electrolyte drink mix that replaces essential hydration faster than water alone.
Cell coverage drops off within a mile of most trailheads. The Nat Geo trail map is your primary tool. The GPS watch and InReach are backup. A waterproof map case isn't optional in this park; rain will turn paper to mush in an hour.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park Trail Map
illustrated trail map with backcountry shelters and trail details.

Compass
Lightweight and reliable compass

Waterproof Map Case
Clear PVC map case with lanyard. Keeps paper maps dry in rain or river crossings.
Everytime I hike in the Smokys I end up cold and wet. Invest in a high quality rain jacket. Spring and fall in the Smokies need a rain jacket, a fleece, and a synthetic puffy. The Patagonia Nano Puff retains warmth when damp — which matters more here than in any park out West.

Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket
Men's ultralight waterproof breathable rain jacket. The upgrade from the Frog Toggs Poncho.

Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket
Synthetic insulation puffy that retains warmth when wet. Better than down for humid or wet parks.

Comfy, casual, and versatile Women's zip-up fleece jacket.

Even on a day hike, an emergency blanket is a 2-ounce insurance policy. Weather in the Smokies turns fast, and "I'll be back by 4" is how people end up spending an unexpected night out.

Emergency Blanket
Designed with insulation in mind, mylar emergency blanket can reflect over 90% of body heat, effectively preventing heat loss and ensuring your comfort and protection even in the harshest conditions.
Trekking poles serve double duty in the Smokies — probing stream depth and bracing on slick rock around waterfalls. A small dry bag for your phone and wallet is worth the 2 ounces.

Cork Trekking Poles
Get extra support and walk comfortably with these hiking poles.

Mini multi-tool
A compact multitool features needle nose pliers, wire cutters, tweezers, bottle opener, retail package opener, plain edge blade pocket knife, scissors, small and medium flat head driver, fine and coarse file

Dry Bag Set
3-pack of waterproof dry bags in 8L, 13L, and 20L sizes. Essential for river crossings and rainy days.
Pack toe-sock liners alongside your hiking socks. Feet stay damp in the Smokies from creek crossings, mud, and sweat. This means blister risk between toes is the silent trip-ender.

Men's Sport Briefs
Designed for a snug active fit and lower rise, ideal for high-energy activities

Midweight Cushion Hiking Socks
Men's fine gauge knitted sock provides mid-level cushion density under your foot. Comes with a lifetime guarantee!
